Why I Started Broadway Wiz

by Joy Rosenthal

The most popular question I get these days is “Why did I start Broadway Wiz, and how did it come about?” So here’s the story.

I was stage-dooring at “If/Then” with Serena, and I was talking to people about how to get cheap tickets to Broadway. I was telling them all of the tips and tricks I knew, plus the ideas I had. They asked if I had it written down, like on a blog. I said no, but my Serena chimed in and said, “You should start one!”

That night Serena called me. “Let’s start the blog!”

Me: “No, I don’t like writing!”

Serena: “It could be fun! What’s a good name to call it?”

Me: “I don’t want to start one, but if I did I would call it ‘Wizamania.’”

Serena: “You can’t because Wicked would sue you. (She was half kidding)”

But I really wanted the word “wiz” or “wizard” to be a part of the name. After throwing around every possible combination of words, Serena suggested “Broadway Wiz”. I said ok and we hung up.

I still didn’t know she was serious, because at the start of the conversation I had said no to a blog. But a few hours later she called me and said, “I bought the domain and made a logo. What do you think?”

I told her, “The logo is awesome; it looks good.”

“Glad you like it,” she said. “Start writing.”

And that’s how Broadway Wiz came about. I’m so happy she convinced me to start it. I have had so many great opportunities and had the chance to meet some great Broadway people. I hope my site just keeps growing. Thank you all for reading! Stay tuned for Broadway giveaways coming soon to celebrate our second anniversary.
