It’s “Just too Good to be True!” If you haven’t Jersey Boys yet, you are seriously missing out – go see it! It is one of the best musicals out there right now, if I do say so myself.
When I saw Jersey Boys the first time I didn’t know what to expect. I only knew it was a musical about four guys from New Jersey. As I sat in my seat in the August Wilson Theater waiting for the show to start, I was so excited for what I was about to see. I had gotten my tickets last minute from TKTS (probably the last time I used them). It was after this show I discovered student tickets, rush and lotteries – much cheaper ways to see more shows! (Disclaimer: TKTS might charge more but they do have fantastic seats! Just always make sure to ask where the seats are located).
Jersey Boys is based on the story of Frankie Vallie and The Four Seasons: Frankie Valli, Bob Gaudio, Tommy DeVito and Nick Massi. (now played by Richard H. Blake, Joseph Leo Bwarie, Quinn VanAntwerp, Matt Bogar) The musical chronicles the lives of a group of blue-collar boys from the wrong side of the tracks and how they wrote their own songs, and invented they found their “sound.” and becoming one of the biggest American pop music sensations of all time. Sitting in that theater it was like listening to a live jukebox.
When the show started I was confused because the first song they sang was French, not English; then Tommy Devito narrated saying, “It’s their [Jersey Boys] number one song in France!” The name of the song was “Ces Soirees-la” which translates to Oh what Night in English. After that they started singing in English and I was in heaven. I knew so many songs it was like I was listening to my favorite oldies radio station. From “Sherry,” to “Big Girls Don’t Cry,” to “Can’t Take My Eyes Off You,” to “December 1963 (Oh, What a Night),” and many more.
I thoroughly enjoyed learning how the Four Seasons became the massive hit they were, and how came up with their name. The group really was like a posse of energizer bunnies – they just kept going and going, no matter what was going on in their lives and who, if anyone, was showing up to see them. They sang between narrations and it was just like a concert! When they started to sing “Walk Like a Man,” I was so excited because I knew the song from the movie, Mrs Doubtfire. The song is played at some point near the beginning, in the background when Robbin Williams is dressed as Mrs Doubtfire. I always thought it was a funny song. I whispered to my friend I actually know this song from a movie and her response was that it was a Four Seasons song FIRST.
After intermission, Frankie Valli played by Jarrod Spector sang( Now playing the role of Frankie Valli is Joseph Leo Bwarie he is also really good, Jarrod Spector is now in Beautiful go see him in it)., “Can’t Take My Eyes Off You.” Once again I was super excited, like giddy happy, because that’s my favorite part of the movie Ten Things I Hate About You; when Heath Ledger sings it to Julia Stiles – seriously best part of the movie (my friend wasn’t thrilled about that reference either). Regardless it was played the same way as in the movie and I couldn’t stop smiling the rest of the song it was just perfect.
I wanted to give a standing ovation after it was over (the crowd goes wild!) but no one else was standing so I didn’t.
Jersey Boys is full of high energy talent. The music and singing are SUPER and the storyline is thrilling. I really enjoyed every second! The show is a fantastic way of documenting the Four Seasons. I loved the show so much I went back the following week and got student tickets to see it again. I total I have seen the show five times…and still counting! I even now own the movie. Jersey Boys has been on Broadway for 9 years now and I hope it lasts a LOT longer!
